Wire Mix: Wave Count

June 2019

Hear a 44 minute wave-inspired montage by Wire contributors Wayne Marshall and Stefan Helmreich drawing on 70 pieces of music composed between 1830–2018

Building from MIT professor of anthropology Stefan Helmreich’s research into ocean science and popular culture representations of waves, he and technomusicologist Wayne Marshall have carefully crafted this epic montage of music composed between 1830–2018, all of which aims to “evoke waves via various compositional strategies and styles”. These styles include classical, romantic, modernist, electronic and experimental, as well as surf rock, reggae and bossa nova, to name some.

The pair have arranged the music into rough chronological and thematic sections, outlined in the tracklist below. In addition to the textual tracklist, Helmreich and Marshall have also made a video version of the montage, which includes visual cues as each track enters the mix, while also illustrating when certain pieces overlap.
