Telephone Music is a collaborative music project inspired by the popular children's game Telephone (Chinese Whispers in the UK). In this adaptation for The Wire, Todd Lerew, the game's curator, begins by recording a song and allowing the next participant to listen to it only once. They must then record their own version of the song from memory and pass it on to the next person or group.
After this has been repeated a number of times, all versions are made public and a new round begins. While it is intended that each participant will try to recreate the same song, they are encouraged to do so with whatever means are available (instrumentation/style), much as a verbal message can be communicated by many different people with different speaking voices.
