Hypercustom
Website of Dutch luthier/experimental instrument builder Yuri
Landman, whose simple but elegantly designed third bridge
instruments we discovered in 2010, alongside the workshops that he
runs. Instruments such as the Homeswinger have
been useful in understanding the physical relationships between
string length, bridges and the resulting sounds and timbres that we
like to get out of our guitars.
Super
Critical Mass This is an Australian collective
comprising composers Julian Day, Luke Jaaniste and Janet McKay who
we had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside while they
were in the country for Manchester's Future Everything Festival
earlier this year. Specialising in massed groups of single
instruments, site specificity and group interaction, their projects
present an accessible surface simplicity coupled with a thoughtful
community-minded approach, resulting in beautiful intuitive
compositions with a panoramic scope.
The Double
Negative A Liverpool based online magazine with
bags of class, a strong aesthetic and editorial policy. It's mainly
focused on art, film, design and music in the city but also
frequently covers the more 'in-between' events, providing an
interesting forum for local discussion. One of several switched on
Liverpool culture sites that aren't afraid to slay some local
sacred cows.
Low
Point The brilliant Nottingham-based label that
released our debut and is about to put out our new record. They
release limited run vinyl of ambient/drone/experimental music.
Personal favourites are the cavernous cyclical psychedelia of
Kogumaza's eponymous album and Kleefstra/Bakker/Kleefstra's
Griis – an intoxicating mixture of rustling field
recordings, looped guitars and Frisian poetry that's like a cross
between Robert Ashley and Richard Skelton.
The
a.P.A.t.T. Orchestra Online presence of The
a.P.A.t.T Orchestra – an inclusive ensemble of no fixed size or
instrumentation incorporating musicians of all ages, backgrounds
and abilities based on the Scratch Orchestra. Since forming in 2009
they have performed works by Terry Riley, John Cage, Cornelius
Cardew and Philip Glass; commissioned and premiered new music by
Howard Skempton and several Liverpool based composers. They've also
undertaken an ambitious concert series that included performances
in the crypt of Liverpool's catholic cathedral and a site specific
version of Gavin Bryars' The Sinking Of The Titanic in
Liverpool's maritime museum. Defined by its inclusivity, lack of
pretension and communal enthusiasm, the orchestra continues to
cultivate an impressively diverse audience.
Hotel Maids Smile
In Unison This is an anonymous Liverpool based
bootlegger who came to our attention after capturing a couple of
our live shows. No idea who he/she is but their archives cover an
esoteric range of all genres with palpable enthusiasm – excellently
recorded sets from The Necks, Eugene Chadbourne and several by the
a.P.A.t.T Orchestra can be found here. We like their old school
dedication to the craft. Listen to tracks
