Watch the intro sequence from a restored version of Werner Herzog's 1972 film Aguirre, Wrath Of God, soundtracked by Popol Vuh.

Herzog's film was an important early work in the German New Wave of cinema during the 1970s. With the volatile actor Klaus Kinski in the title role, Aguirre, Wrath Of God tells the story of a group of Spanish conquistadores' increasingly fractious journey unravelling down the Amazon and Orinoco rivers. The film was scored by Krautrock outfit, Popol Vuh, whose founder Florian Fricke was friends with Herzog at the time.

Aguirre, Wrath Of God opens on 7 June and is screening as part of the Werner Herzog season at BFI Southbank, running throughout June and July.
