Two Faster Than Sound events take place at Snape Maltings in Suffolk this month, featuring The Wire 332 cover artist Christian Marclay with Steve Beresford, John Butcher, Mark Sanders, Alan Tomlinson and Suffolk Phoenix Brass on 1 October (4pm, £12), followed by Roly Porter (of Vex'd), Cynthia Millar and Rod Maclachlan on 29 October (6:30pm, £10).
Christian Marclay will be performing Ephemera and Manga Scroll, plus Faster Than Sound commission Everday on 1 October. The new commission incorporates film collage, and will include performances by Steve Beresford, John Butcher and local brass band Suffolk Phoenix Brass. Roly Porter will perform Fall Back on 29 October, which uses sections of Ondes Martenot and the Dobro (both patented in 1928) which will be played by Cynthia Millar. Porter will also perform his new album Aftertime live for the first time (click here to stream the album). Rod Maclachlan will be accompanying Millar and Porter with his projection visuals.
Faster Than Sound was born out of Aldeburgh Music, the latter an organisation primarily concerned with classical music from young composers founded over 60 years ago by composer Benjamin Britten. Aldeburgh founded Faster Than Sound (with Joana Seguro of Lumin) in reaction to growing use of electronics and film with classical music, and since 2009 has supported a programme of five annual residencies and specially commissioned works.
