Watch a short film that explores the experimental music scene in Rio de Janeiro through the lens of the city’s Novas Frequências festival

SEM FIO: Sintonizando Novas Frequências (WIRELESS: Tuning Into Novas Frequências) is a short film that attempts to capture something of Rio de Janeiro’s cultural life via its annual experimental music festival, Novas Frequências.

Filmed during the 14th edition of the festival, between 7–15 December 2024, the documentary, which was directed by Ivan Nishitani, investigates the experience of living and making music in the city from the perspective of eight artists: Caxtrinho, Ciana, Fausto Fawcett, Maria Esmeralda (Thalin, Cravinhos, VCR Slim, Pirlo, iloveyoulangelo), Podeserdesligado, Salisme, Valesuchi, and Vera Fischer Era Clubber.

The 15th edition of Novas Frequências takes place in December.

Caxtrinho, who features in this film, was interviewed in The Wire 493. You can buy a copy of the issue here. Subscribers to the magazine can also read the article online in our digital library.
