View footage and listen to a sound sample from The Alvin submarine, in which sonic anthropologist Stefan Helmreich recorded his underwater sounds. An article by Helmreich about his deep sea exploits is in The Wire 302.

Watch a video filmed on board the three person submersible, The Alvin, deep under the Pacific Ocean. The footage was shot automatically by a camera positioned on the outside of the submarine during the sea dive in which Helmreich recorded the underwater sounds documented in his article in The Wire 302.

You can also listen to a short audio sample Stefan made during the dive - which includes an evocative phrase spoken by pilot Bruce Strickrott: "That is the sound of the thrusters, driving us down..."
