To mark the digital re-release of the Japanese musician's first ever cassette, Room40 share some exclusive archival footage of the experimental instrument builder

Australian label Room40 is making Akio Suzuki's first cassette release Zeitstudie available for the first time since 1984. “In recent years it has become difficult for me to carry heavy instruments around with me,” says Suzuki, “and I have started to do simpler performances with objects assembled on site. So it feels wonderful to have the sound of the battery of instruments I used back then to be returned to the light of day.”

Zeitstudie features Suzuki's ANALAPOS instrument – a device made from metal cans and coil spring which he first invented in 1970 – as well as a self-designed glass harmonica created in 1975. Both instruments can be seen in use in this footage of Suzuki performing the compositions “Analapos Type A” and “De Koolmees” in 1982.

Zeitstudie DL/LP is available to pre-order now and released 23 October.
