Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Suzanne Ciani collaborate for a Buchla voyage across the transforming landscape of Bolinas, California

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Suzanne Ciani have collaborated on a new album for RVNG Intl's FRKWYS series. Marking the label's 13th installment of the “intergenerational collaboration series”, this release is based on a series of improvisations that took place in Ciani's coastal home studio in the Pacific coastal community of Bolinas, California, where both artists currently reside.

For Sunergy the pair have created meditation soundscapes on the Buchla 200 E and Buchla Music Easel, updated versons of the 1960s synthesizer created by Don Buchla.

The release is described by the label as a reflection on the “unstable forces at play across the Bolinas horizon”, with Ciani and Smith considering “Bolinas in the 21st century, a once-thriving artist’s refuge now vulnerable to real estate pressure extending from affluent San Francisco, and more irreparably, the spectre of climate change erasing its many waterfront habitats.”

Directed by Sean Hellfritsch, the video here is for the album track “Closed Circuit”. Sunergy is released by RVNG Intl on 16 September. Also due for release is an accompanying documentary by Hellfritsch.
