Damien Roach extends the world of his AI-assisted album Mirage FM with new visuals
“You’re finding a way to deliver the data,” says multimedia artist and producer Damien Roach, speaking to Emily Bick in The Wire 470, “in both the sense of a postal delivery, but also in a maternal way. It’s not you, it’s not about you.” Roach makes the analogy of “inverse archeology” when describing his practice of collating AI-generated samples to map the infinite complexities of the experience of sound. He explains that he sees himself as serving the material, preferring to “allow the material to live,” adding, “that’s always been a big part of the patten project as a whole, trying to sidestep that centering of the self in making things.”
patten is now at the point of extending his live show with short AI-assisted vignettes, one of which is shared for the first time here. “The live AV show will feature these and visualisations of each song on the album,” he says over email. “There’s a Mirage FM Expansion Pack as well, with videos, images, samples, and text that’ll be bundled with the Bandcamp download, and an edition of home-burnt CDRs incoming too. «????? ??????? ?? ?????? ?????» ”
