Aldeburgh Music's Faster Than Sound series commissions different artists to work together on an original work over the course of a week-long residency, culminating in a Saturday performance.
The above video documents Faster Than Sound's most recent project between the composer Jennifer Walshe and sound artist Lee Patterson, The Chimes Hour. The inspiration for the work was drawn from Suffolk chronicler George Ewart Evans, who related an old Suffolk belief that babies born between the "Chimes Hours" (the ringing of the midnight churchbells) could “discern happenings hidden from the sight of lesser mortals.”
For The Chimes Hour Walshe and Patterson occupied all the spaces in Aldeburgh Music's Hoffmann Building for their composition, using the building and its sonic properties "as an extra member of the ensemble," drawing out the resonant frequencies of the different rooms, the drones of the smoke detection system, and hooking up office appliances to contact mics and utilising their electro-magnetic emanations.
