The Swedish composer shares footage of the premiere performance of his Nattens Inbrott quartet

“I’m very interested in this kind of twilight zone between pitch and noise,” Swedish composer Magnus Granberg tells Nick Storring in The Wire 473, “pitch and modality being very central in a way, but also being kind of obscured.”

Starting out as a jazz saxophonist, Granberg says he later had to remove himself from his instrument “in order to be able to listen and think more openly and freely”. This graduation of musical approach came from a new interest in abstraction and modern composition.

A keen collaborator who performs frequently with various groups, here Granberg presents footage from one such project. Filmed in 2021 at Sound Of Stockholm, this concert was the premiere performance of a relatively recently formed quartet Nattens Inbrott with musicians Vilde Sandve Alnaes, Inga Margrete Aas and Erik Carlsson. The 45 minute long piece, composed by Granberg, is titled Holde Träume, Kehret Wieder! [Sweet Dreams, Come Back!]
