Glasgow based percussionist Fritz Welch talks to US free jazz musician Daniel Carter

Saxophonist Daniel Carter discusses the beginnings of his improvisational practice with percussionist Fritz Welch in Daniel Carter Plays The Piano, a new short film directed by Tim K Smith. Since starting out in the 1970s, Carter has worked with musicians such as bassist William Parker, Italian drummer Frederico Ughi and pianist Matthew Shipp, and alongside fellow reeds player Sabir Mateen in the quartet Test. Welch has played in Asparagus Piss Raindrop and Lambs Gamble. He also works in visual art. The film features two performances, with Carter on piano and saxophone, and Welch on drums.

Film maker Smith also directed the WFMU documentary Sex And Broadcasting (2014). Daniel Carter Plays The Piano premiered at Newcastle's TUSK festival in October 2019.
