The career of the New York City based artist and composer Meredith Monk spans 40 years and takes in music, film, dance and theatre.
"What I think I'm trying for is to make a music that delineates energies for which we don't have words," she tells Frances Morgan in The Wire 354. "There are experiences in our lives that we cannot name; there are feelings and emotions that we don't have names for that are between the cracks... they're like shades that are so much more subtle than the emotions we can name. And I think that that's what I'm trying to do with the voice."
All these tracks (save "last song") are taken from Beginnings, a compilation Monk put together of her own early work, beginning with her first solo vocal performances in the 1960s, through to performances and work in the 70s. It was released on John Zorn's Tzadik in November 2009. "last song" is from Monk's Impermanence.
