Nyahh founder Willie Stewart collates tracks from the Irish imprint’s back catalogue, fusing traditional folk, improvised instrumental and weird experimental
“I am really keen on the idea of bringing in elements of Traditional Irish music and seeing how it sits when paralleled with sound art, minimal or repetitive music,” says Irish musician Willie Stewart, who started the Nyahh label to help promote Ireland based experimental artists. “Especially Sean-nos singing,” he continues, “which is so unique to Ireland, even though you might hear similar vocal techniques and styles in Morocco or parts of Eastern Europe.
“It makes a lot of sense to me to have the human drone of Sean-nos next to the organic drones of a Natalia Beylis and Eimear Reidy piece. One album that came out on Nyahh that really bridges the two is Ian Lynch’s (Lankum) project One Leg One Eye. Ian has elements of drone, noise, Black Metal and Irish folk all masterfully mixed and mashed together to create one hell of a unique and noisy album.”
This mix, recorded for The Wire following the release of Nyahh’s Under The Island: A Compilation Of Experimental Music In Ireland 1960–1994, is intended to represent what Stewart refers to as the “landscape” of the label. “Handmade, honest and very personal to the artist,” he concludes.
