“We have this mis-direct built into our taste… we want to match the feeling our inspirations give us,” says Vonne Parks of They Hate Change, speaking to Neil Kulkarni in The Wire 452. “We will tweak and twist things to the point where we both feel: this doesn’t sound like anything else. That’s how we know when a track is done.” In their new Wire interview, the Florida based duo talk about the freedom of hiphop and the influence of streaming old pirate radio grime sets online, as well as their love of ambient music and the unconventional way in which this is reflected in their own productions.

To accompany their Wire feature They Hate Change have recorded a new mix, giving listeners an idea of the kind of atmospheres that have informed their most recent work. Their latest single “Faux Leather” for example is reportedly an homage to Manchester post-punk group A Certain Ratio – also included in the tracklist.

“Our mix consists of many artists that inspired and helped us expand on this ‘Enjoyable Ignorable Music’ theory we’ve been developing over some years now,” say the duo. “Most of the songs in the mix are less lyrically driven and more focused on grooves and feelings, a driving force behind our recent productions. Our tendency to fall into Bandcamp wormholes helped us discover new favourites like Finn and Nicola Cruz, whose new music blends well with the more classic breakbeat and sample focused stuff we’re into like Roni Size or Saint Etienne.”
