“Beat Odyssey 2020 was recorded before the Covid19 lockdown and Black Lives Matter demonstrations,” writes DJ Mariam Rezaei in her review of the new album by Mix Master Mike and Steve Jordan, featured in The Wire 439, “but nonetheless taps into the global zeitgeist. The first single “The Gospel” is dedicated to all nonviolent protestors, with proceeds from sales donated to The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Vogel Alcove.”
The album, soon to be released by Jay-Vee Records, includes 14 cuts from fully improvised live sessions, featuring Jordan on drums and Mix Master Mike on turntables. “It was also absolutely, completely in the moment, with no digital trickery or automated anything” says Jordan. “We didn’t use any sequencing. I think that’s the biggest thing in this record – there are no loops in that way. We played all that stuff, and then Mike took it to his studio and sprinkled some fairy dust on it. He did some editing, titled all of the tunes, and then sent it back to me.” The resulting Beat Odyssey 2020 is available from 28 August.
