An audio introduction to Lauren Bousfield

June 2023

The Wire 473 featured maximalist composer compiles a playlist of tracks picked from some key releases in her sprawling back catalogue

“At least a little bit of ‘fuck you’ in music is important to me,” declares Los Angeles based Lauren Bousfield, speaking to Claire Biddles in The Wire 473. “There’s definitely different ways that people resist capitalism, but I just like it when it’s evident.”

The dizzying speed, ruthless nature and dark consequences of consumerist culture are themes that Bousfield has been interrogating via her high-tempo maximalist productions continuously throughout her decades-long career. Following sociological studies into amusement parks, a previous project carried the pseudonym Nero's Day At Disneyland, under which Bousfield released the albums Attention Shoppers and From Rotting Fantasylands in 2006 and 2009 respectively. Her most recent release Salesforce includes track titles such as “Deserted Olympic Villages”, “Headstone Prices On Credit” and “Permanently Closed”. Despite Bousfield's critical perspective, she maintains she aims to have a tension between disaster and hope, telling Biddles that her music is for “making people who are looked down on feel powerful.”

Here, the electronic artist compiles tracks from a spread of albums released over the past 11 years.
