Wire mix: Trân Uy Đúc & DJ Maicol

To accompany his interview in The Wire 495, the Vietnamese producer and video artist Trân Uy Đúc curates a special Wire mix in collaboration with Glasgow based DJ Maicol
“People have categorised me as deconstructed club, epic collage,” says Trân Uy Đúc. “My music’s really just a diary. Collage suggests intentionally playing with different things to change their meaning. But I always try to reach some kind of linearity. I can’t sing something that’s not my immediate feelings.”
Self-released earlier this year, his latest album Bird-Head seems to blur introversion and extroversion. His vocals have a unique intimacy. They sound like your speakers have picked up voice notes not meant for public consumption while also carrying the confidence and energy to make a club sway. The music is in constant flux, reconciling disparate beats and textures – from clipped funk guitar to skewed trap.
For this exclusive Wire mix, he collaborates with Glasgow based DJ Maicol (Michael O’Hare) to explore the transnational function of the dance form bolero, and the irony of its mass popularity during and after the war-torn era in Vietnam from the 1950s to 70s.
