Wire mix: KAVARI

January 2024

The Glasgow based artist pieces together a mix of sounds that provided a soundtrack to a sickness caused by black mould exposure and inspiration for her latest release Against The Wood, Opposed To Flesh

“This mix is a collection of what inspired my new album sonically,” writes DJ and producer Cameron Sofia Winters aka KAVARI over email. “I was listening to all these songs religiously before and during the creation process.”

As Misha Farrant writes in her review of Against The Wood, Opposed To Flesh in The Wire 479/480, the album is a departure from the “hard dance inflected arrangements” found on KAVARI's previous releases Suture and Lost Cuts. “Constructing harsh auditory scenes like excerpts from survival horror soundtracks, this new project leans into noise and dark ambient territory,” says Farrant.

KAVARI has cited found footage horror films and horror video games as influences, and those references also seep into this mix; an unnerving and evocative sound collage that also serves as a document of a time of illness and altered perception for the artist, due to exposure to black mould. “Some of the side effects are anxiety, paranoia, and an impending sense of doom,” KAVARI continues, “which I feel as though I was embedding into the [Against The Wood] project while working on it. It's what the start of the mix is referencing. Black mould is really cool, it makes you feel like you're going crazy and going to die but in a unique ‘Lovecraftian’ type of way. Was extremely inspiring.”
