Steve Barker selects tracks from the dub techno vocalist’s back catalogue of collaborations and solo releases
“Over a career now spanning more than 30 years,” writes Steve Barker in The Wire 470, “Paul St Hilaire, formerly known as Tikiman, has established himself as a legendary though vaporous figure, still an outlier due to both his reticence – virtually no interviews are on record and those which do exist are monosyllabic – and his singular vision being realised only via the medium of dub techno.”
Born in Dominica but based in Berlin since 1994, St Hilaire cut his first track in 1996 with Moritz Von Oswald and Mark Ernestus as Round Three. “The critical acclaim afforded these recordings made St Hilaire in demand as one of the few recognised vocalists in dub techno,” Barker continues. “He went on to record with Deadbeat, Larry Heard, Stereotyp, the Jahtari boys in Leipzig, The Bug and, perhaps most successfully, contributed to 2009’s The Seduction Of Silence from Stephen Hitchell’s Intrusion project, lending liquid flowing vocals and Rhodes keys to “Little Angel”.”
Here Barker compiles many of these collaborations and more into a playlist showcasing St Hilaire's work.
