Hear the new album by the Tunisian producer and multi-instrumentalist
“The starting point was logically the place that I know the most – the Maghreb. I said to myself, I will start with something I know very well, and go towards the things I don’t know,” says producer and multi-instrumentalist Sofyann Ben Youssef, speaking to Francis Gooding in The Wire 440. Youssef is explaining his explorative approach to music making as AMMAR 808, whose latest album draws on the sounds of the Tamil Nadu region of southern India. Global Control/Invisible Invasion is the result of an intense trip to the city of Chennai, where Youssef restlessly studied Carnatic music and collaborated with many vocalists, including KL Sreeram and Susha. The chosen recordings heard here were all completed in situ in one take.
