Interdisciplinary performer eddy kwon shares music from a collaborative performance with cellist and composer Lester St Louis
“Transformation is embedded into every thread of my work,” says musician, vocalist, poet and movement artist eddy kwon, speaking to Kurt Gottschalk in The Wire 463. “Freedom is not just a fixed state. It passes and transforms just like any other experience.”
In her recent Wire interview, the New York based performer explains how the many communities she is and has been a part of have influenced her far-reaching experimental practice, which includes elements of dance and theatre, jazz and improvisation, writing and singing. “It all overlaps,” she says. “It’s all connected and it’s all me.”
A frequent collaborator, kwon provides an example of such work here. Recorded at her home in Red Hook, Brooklyn earlier in the year, this 13 minute piece was created with cellist and composer Lester St Louis.
“There is an ecstatic freedom I feel when I make music with Lester St Louis,” kwon says over email. “This freedom, which is cultivated through an ongoing practice of friendship, allows for a co-creative experience akin to running full speed along the spine of a mountain. Ready to jump off every cliff, toothy-faced with drippy hearts in hand, we make music that floods us with a kind of happy horror. To improvise with an artist as brilliant, deep, and generous as Lester is one of the most treasured gifts in my life, and I'm so grateful to be able to share this unreleased recording.”
