Listen: Erikoisdance label tracks

June 2015

Listen to three exclusive tracks by artists on Helsinki's Erikoisdance label

Daisy Hyde writes about the Finnish label in The Wire 376: "Erikoisdance, Helsinki’s burn on demand CD-R imprint, is an enigmatic affair. The label, whose output is centred around lo-fi dance, has maintained a steady release schedule since its inception in the early 2000s, with the majority of requests for copies coming from fans based mainly in Belgium, France and the UK... Founded as a platform to release label founder Tom Backström’s own productions as Erikoismies, Erikoisdance deals only with CD-Rs on a strict mail order only basis. Though Backström is a graphic designer by trade, the releases are far from overdesigned, scrawled with handwritten descriptions and contained in plastic sleeves, although these include lovingly laid out sleevenotes. “When you make it an album or something, you want it to have a social or humane point," says Backström. "It’s not just files on the computer sent off to some server where you get statistics for how many people have listened to it. There is something nice in people emailing you and you mailing it off.”
