Listen: Marcela Lucatelli live

January 2020

To coincide with her feature in The Wire 432, the Brazilian composer and performer shares a live recording of a recent performance in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

“This was a first-time encounter” says Brazilian born, Copenhagen based artist Marcela Lucatelli, “cleverly arranged by Ciclo De Música Contemporânea in Salvador, just after a solo set in the same evening.” Lucatelli is describing this 20 minute performance recorded in June 2019, which features Stephanie Griffin on viola, Andrea May on turntable and Lucatelli herself on vocals. “Stephanie Griffin was doing an artistic residency in the area at that time” she continues “and Andrea May is currently based in the city. I have always been in love with the Brazilian state of Bahia and what it hosts culturally. This set happened to gather strong artists from quite different backgrounds that immediately found a unique, outspoken sonic language of their own. The material has a certain lyrical, 'afro-medieval', futuristic flavour. There are some very Brazilian, 'post-hinterland' motives. We were definitely breathing the city that provided our meeting.”

Read Lucatelli speak more about improvising, collaborating and responding to her surroundings in an interview with Philip Clark in The Wire 432. Wire subscribers can also read the article in full via the digital archive.
