Fonal starts donations page to cover vinyl releases

Fonal records has set up a donations page on its site to fund vinyl production. Sami Sänpäkkilä says that his sales have been in decline since 2009 and now he needs to find alternative means in order to continue pressing vinyl.

"We've started our own site as we are not collecting pledges for a certain release, which is what Kickstarter or IndieGoGo are for" he says. "What we hope to achieve is a few random donations now and then to cover our losses that mainly stem from doing vinyl.

"The kind of elaborate packages we make with extra booklets, UV coatings, or special inserts, can cost anything from €2000–€3500. That doesn't include copyright costs, shipping or other extra costs. We do mainly a 500 print run, of which a certain amount we give to the artist, some we use for promo. We basically need to sell all of the run to make ends meet."

Sänpäkkilä asked fans if a donations page would work (he had reservations), but found the response overwhelmingly positive, so is now accepting donations of €1– €500. For more info, or to donate, head here
