Glad Cafe fundraiser prints go on sale

Faced with rising costs, Glasgow's music and arts venue has come out fighting to stay independent

Glasgow’s Glad Cafe is selling a series of limited edition artist prints as part of its bid to keep it independent. Based in the city's Southside, the arts and music venue was founded by the Smillie family in 2012 following a visit to East London's Cafe Oto. "Three years ago my sister Sarah was staying in Dalston and took my mother to Cafe Oto,” said venue manager Joe Smillie back in 2012. “On arriving back in Glasgow [Smillie's mother] decided that this was something the Southside was missing. She wouldn't stop talking about it and eventually roped my wife Karina and myself in."

Ten sets of Glad Editions will go public on 29 November at a Glad Cafe party featuring DJ sets from Duncan Marquiss of The Phantom Band and artist Tommy Grace of Django Django. Each print will run to an edition of 30 and they will be available to buy individually or in a whole set. Online sales start on 30 November and artworks will be exhibited at the venue throughout December.

Participating artists are Laura Aldridge, Monster Chetwynd, Rabiya Choudhry, Ruth Ewan, Norman Gilbert, Tommy Grace & Kate Owens, Kathryn Joseph & Rhian Nicholas, Lorna Macintryre, Kimberley O’Neill and Cathy Wilkes.
