Godspeed You! Black Emperor have been awarded the Canadian Polaris Music Prize, which lands them a $30,000 prize. Polaris describe themselves as recognising "albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history."
The group were announced as winners at yesterday's gala, but did not collect their award, and have released a statement denouncing the competition: "we’ve been plowing our field on the margins of weird culture for almost 20 years now, and 'this scene is pretty cool but what it really fucking needs is an awards show' is not a thought that’s ever crossed our minds."
This doesn't mean that they've declined to take the prize money though, they'll be using it to set up a programme in Quebec to give prisoners access to musical instruments. Full statement here.
