Tyshawn Sorey is artist-in-residence at Jazzfest Berlin

New York based composer, drummer and bandleader takes up residency, performing with four separate acts

The 54th edition of Berlin Jazzfest will take place from 31 October – 5 November. This year the event will be directed by Richard Williams for the third and final time, hosting the festival's core focus on the connections of the music scene of Berlin with the US and London. Invited as the festival's first ever artist-in-residence will be American drummer and composer Tyshawn Sorey, who will appear in four combinations. With his regular trio at Haus der Berliner Festspiele on 2 November; with saxophonist Angelika Niescier, with Gebhard Ullmann, and solo on 4 November, and with a big band of 20 the following night.

As part of the theme, other US guests include Nels Cline, Ambrose Akinmusire, Heroes Are Gang Leaders, Steve Lehman & Sélébéyone and John Beasley, while the London scene will be covered by concerts with Shabaka and the Ancestors, Mônica Vasconcelos, Kit Downes and Empirical.

The festival will also make a point of celebrating the centenary of the birth of Thelonious Monk, whose compositions will be explored by MONK'estra with Till Brönner and Silke Eberhard & Sarah Tandy. Jazzfest will also be hosting a series of shows over the airwaves.
