Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise is to be reissued on DVD and Blu-ray via MVD Entertainment. Robert Mugge’s 1980 documentary on Sun Ra and his Arkestra was the result of two years spent shooting the ensemble and their leader. He filmed live performances at Baltimore’s Famous Ballroom, Danny’s Hollywood Palace in Philadelphia, and on the roof of Philadelphia’s International House. Sun Ra’s poetry and mythological pronouncements were filmed in the Egyptian Room of the University of Pennsylvania’s anthropology museum, in a sculpture garden in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park, in front of the White House in Washington, DC, and in and around the house he shared with band members in Germantown, Philadelphia. Transferred to HD from the original 16mm film, songs performed include “Astro Black”, “Mister Mystery”, “We Travel The Spaceways”, “Along Came Ra/The Living Myth”, “Spaceship Earth (Destination Unknown)”, among others. Sun Ra: A Joyful Noise will be released on 11 December by MVD Entertainment.
