Inventor of the electrified likembe and original member of the congotronics group dies age 85
Konono N˚ 1 founder and inventor of the electrified likembe Mingiedi Mawangu has died aged 85. Mawangu was the last remaining original member of the innovative ensemble who formed in 1966 and combine polyrhythmic percussion, junkyard salvage and DIY amplification into a highly distinctive African dance music style which gained a wider audience upon the release of their Congotronics album via Crammed Discs in 2004. Mawangu was on the cover of The Wire 314 which featured Nick Richardson’s report on Konono N˚ 1 from Kinshasa. He is survived by his son Augustin.
