Nottingham Contemporary’s Alien Encounters exhibition focuses on Sun Ra

Nottingham Contemporary is hosting a series of Sun Ra dedicated events in tandem with the arts centre’s Alien Encounters programme. The programme includes a Sun Ra exhibition called Sun Ra (1914-1993): The Cosmo Man as well as Rana Hamadeha’s Sun Ra: Space Is The Place inspired show about the serial killer sisters Raka and Sakina; Pauline Boudry and Renate Lorenz’s film and photography exhibition In Memoriam To Identity; and installations and sculptures from Danai Anesiadou. Upcoming Sun Ra events include Nottingham writer and former Wire contributor Graham Lock’s talk about Sun Ra’s astro black mythology and its roots in African American history and culture, The Study Session: Sun Ra And The Astro Black (19 November), and the Intergalatic Storytelling workshop where participants can learn the art of shadow puppetry and make a Sun Ra inspired film (15–16 December).

Alien Encounters runs until 31 December at Nottingham Contemporary, Nottingham.
