Clarks In Jamaica album compiled by Al Fingers

Al Fingers of One Love Books compiles Clarks In Jamaica album

One Love Books founder Al Fingers has put together a compilation of tracks in celebration of Jamaica's love affair with Clarks shoes. Clarks In Jamaica follows on from One Love's book of the same title that was published in 2012 by the London based independent publisher. Documenting this enduring relationship between Jamaica and the popular footwear brand, the compilation features 21 tracks from artists including Little John, Dillinger, Trinity, Ranking Joe and Supercat. Al Fingers, aka Al Newman, spoke at the V&A this summer about his fascination with the shoes' popularity: “Growing up in England I've always been fascinated by the Jamaican love of Clarks shoes and the way the brand is referenced within reggae and dancehall music. Vybz Kartel’s tune “Clarks” brought the phenomenon to many people’s attention in 2010, but the relationship goes back a lot longer, and I wanted to bring attention to that, highlighting the work of artists such as Dillinger and Little John who sang about Clarks many years before.”

Clarks In Jamaica is released by Greensleeves Records and available now via Spotify.

Borbetomagus documentary screening this November

Jef Merten's Borbetomagus film A Pollock Of Sound rough cut finished

Borbetomagus docu-film A Pollock Of Sound is now screening across Europe. Made from footage shot in the Netherlands in 2010 and in the US and Canada in 2011, the film was put on hold after the cancellation of the group’s 2013 tour. Director Jef Merten shared a rough edit of part one with us back in December 2013, explaining, “after the cancellation of the Borbetomagus European tour – which would have allowed me to finish getting the footage I needed – this documentary was put on hold, though not given up in any way”. The full version of the film about the noise trio is now being screened at various venues throughout Europe this November. The first screening took place at Tusk Festival in early October, with future ones happening at Instants Chavirés, Montreuil (11 November); Les Aterliers Claus, Brussels (12); OCCII, Amsterdam (13); Cinepalace, Kortrijk (14) and Cave 12, Geneva (15). You can watch a trailer of the documentary at borbetomagusmovie.com.

Second in the series of rare archival recordings from the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, NY

The Creative Music Foundation are set to release the second volume of recordings made at the Creative Music Studio workshops in Woodstock, NY, between 1973–1984. This rare set of recordings, taken from the CMS archive, follow on from the first volume released in 2014. Artists featured on the record include Don Cherry, Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell, Paul Motian, Lee Konitz, Collin Walcott, Karl Berger, Baikida Carroll, Aiyb Dieng, Trilok Gurtu, Nana Vasconcelos and more. Creative Music Studio Archive Selections Vol. 2 is released as a 3-CD set and features small and large ensembles as well as world music recordings. CMF co-founder and artistic director Karl Berger says: “These recordings present a cross-section of the cross pollination that occurred regularly at CMS. We divided them up neatly for these CDs, but it was far from divided or neat at CMS! These gems show the free flow of creative energy at CMS.”

Creative Music Studio Archive Selections Vol. 2 will be released on Plant Arts Recordings on 16 October and will include full-length liner notes which cover the history of CMS and its archive project alongside photos from the CMS Archive.

You can also read the transcripts to interviews conducted with some of the artist on the compilation (including Marilyn Crispell, Lee Konitz, Steve Gorn and Frederic Rzewski) as part The Creative Music Foundations Oral History Project. According to the website, audio and video footage of the interviews will be made available pending funding.

Hatsune Miku event in London

A day of events exploring the vocaloid Hatsune Miku happening this month in London

This October London's Rich Mix cinema will host a day dedicated to the virtual vocalist Hatsune Miku. The singing synthesizer – which was launched in 2007 by Crypton Future Media – has been used by the noise group Hijokaidan, whose offshoot Hatsune Kaidan features Hatsune Miku materialised in human form singing alongside Japanese noise veterans Jojo Hiroshige and T Mikawa. The vocaloid was also subject/star of an opera called The End, composed by Keiichiro Shibuya. It is estimated that the programme has been used in over 500,000 songs across the globe.

The day includes a lecture by the Hatsune Miku creator, Hiroyuki Itoh, and a Hatsune Miku performance. There will also be a Hatsune Miku workshop, although note that the description of this seems to imply a four hour session of origami and colouring in. The programme takes place at Rich Mix, London, on 24 October, and you need to book your place for both the concert and the lecture.

CTM 2016 announce Radio Lab winners: Deena Abdelwahed & Marija Bozinovska Jones

CTM 2016 have announced the two winning projects for the Radio Lab open call

The two winning projects for Radio Lab’s open call for the CTM 2016 Festival in Berlin have been announced. The winners are Tunisian musician Deena Abdelwahed and Macedonia born artist Marija Bozinovska Jones. The Radio Lab’s call “sought unusual ideas for pairing the specific artistic possibilities of radio with the potentials of live performance or installation, that also explore the CTM 2016 Festival theme: New Geographies”. The callout brought in a total of 145 submissions from 34 countries. The two winning proposals both look at “collective and decentralised futures”, working with ideas of utopia and dystopia in an increasingly networked society. Called All Hail Mother Internet, electronic artist Deena Abdelwahed’s proposal ponders how life might have been different had she not had access to the internet as a teenager. Marija Bozinovska Jones aka MBJ Wetware proposes a collaboration with Lithuanian producer JG Biberkopf (whose recent Ecologies EP was released in June by Kuedo’s Knives label). The judging panel consisted of Marcus Gammel, Elisabeth Zimmerman, Jan Rohlf, Antye Greie-Ripatti and The Wire contributor Richard Thomas. You can read the full announcement on the CTM website.

Audioscope Festival 15 year anniversary

Audioscope Festival in Oxford celebrate 15 years of raising money for Shelter

Next month will mark the 15th anniversary of Oxford’s Audioscope festival. Founded in 2001, the festival was set up to raise money for the housing and homelessness charity Shelter. So far it has donated £29,000, with this year’s event aiming to round that total up to £30,000.

Plaid, Gazelle Twin and Part Chimp are among those playing at the one day event this November. Talking about Audioscope, Gazelle Twin says, “Shelter's work is especially vital today – with the cut throat economics of the current government and with homelessness on the rise in every corner of the UK. No one should have to face sleeping rough in this country [...] I genuinely hope this gig raises awareness further and a lot of cash for this amazing charity as we approach winter.”

Other artists in the line-up include Arbouretum, Guapo, Marconi Union, Kogumaza, Taman Shud, Demian Castellanos (The Oscillation) and Kone. The festival will take place on 21 November at The Bullingdon in Oxford.
