Supernormal hosting blackout space and three hour continuous performance

Festival working with Qu Junktions on a continuous project called Playpen, featuring ten artists

Supernormal are shaking things up for this year’s edition of their festival at Brazier’s Park in Oxfordshire. The organisers will be presenting a brand new performance space called The Vortex – a blackout space featuring a hybrid of audiovisual performances, live scores, film screenings and more. The festival’s organisers are also working with Qu Junktions on a new project entitled Playpen which they describe as a “wild 3-hour non-stop cacophonous show featuring around 10 acts”.

Supernormal takes place from 7–9 August.

Manuel Göttsching biography published

Author of fan site completes Deep Distance: The Musical Life Of Manuel Göttsching

A biography of German guitarist Manuel Göttsching has been published by Waveform. Deep Distance: The Musical Life of Manuel Göttsching is described by author Christian Wheeldon, who runs a blog dedicated to the artist’s career, as a labour of love and covers Göttsching’s work with Ash Ra Tempel, The Cosmic Jokers and Ashra as well as his solo career including the influential 1984 proto-techno album E2-E4.

The book features exclusive contributions from Harald Grosskopf, Lutz Ulbrich, Steve Baltes, Joaquin Joe Claussell and Steve Hillage along with photographs and reminiscences from fans.

Konono N˚ 1 founder Mingiedi Mawangu has died

Inventor of the electrified likembe and original member of the congotronics group dies age 85

Konono N˚ 1 founder and inventor of the electrified likembe Mingiedi Mawangu has died aged 85. Mawangu was the last remaining original member of the innovative ensemble who formed in 1966 and combine polyrhythmic percussion, junkyard salvage and DIY amplification into a highly distinctive African dance music style which gained a wider audience upon the release of their Congotronics album via Crammed Discs in 2004. Mawangu was on the cover of The Wire 314 which featured Nick Richardson’s report on Konono N˚ 1 from Kinshasa. He is survived by his son Augustin.

Sheffield Doc/Fest opens, includes The Last Poets documentary

A number of music related documentaries including world premiere of film about The Last Poets

This year’s Sheffield Doc/Fest, which opens tomorrow, Friday 5 June, features a number of music documentaries and related events, including the world premiere of a new film about The Last Poets.

Hustlers Convention, directed by Mike Todd, takes as its starting point the album of the same name released in 1973 by Last Poets leader Lightnin’ Rod (Jalal Mansur Nuriddin), and considers the album’s impact on hiphop, with interviewees including KRS One, MC Lyte, Ice T and Chuck D. Nuriddin will be at the premiere on 7 June and will take part in a Q&A.

Also on 7 June, the festival will be hosting the UK premiere of 808, a new film about the history and legacy of the Roland TR808 drum machine. Receiving its UK premiere, on 10 June, is What Happened, Miss Simone?, a new documentary about Nine Simone that features rare concert footage and interviews.

As well as screenings, there will workshops on subjects including music documentary-making, how to score documentaries, and new music technology.

Faust and Tony Conrad to perform at Atonal

1973 album Outside The Dream Syndicate to be performed in Berlin this August

Collaborating live for the first time in 20 years Tony Conrad and Faust will perform their 1973 album Outside The Dream Syndicate at Berlin Atonal. The festival takes over the entire Kraftwerk building from 19–23 August for a programme of world premiere performances, audiovisual shows, installations and more.

Also scheduled is a collaboration between Raster-Noton artist Kangding Ray and Mogwai’s Barry Burns entitled SUMS; Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) debuting his live audiovisual project Sonno; a rare live appearance from Ugandan Methods (Regis and Ancient Methods); the first ever live audiovisual show by Mike Parker; and David Borden and his Mother Mallard Ensemble, who, the festival organisers claim, will “fill the cavernous cathedral with synthesizer soundscapes”.

The Wire’s Art Director in conversation at The Photographer's Gallery

Exhibition on music photography with discussion series and Wire Salon on the aesthetics of underground and experimental music scenes

The Wire will be hosting a number of events at London’s Photographers’ Gallery this summer as part of the exhibition We Want More. Subtitled Image-making & Music In The 21st Century, We Want More will examine the intersection of photography and music since 2000 via a wide variety of images of musicians and fans.

Alongside stylised portraits of the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, the show will include Jason Evans’s publicity shots of Radiohead, Deirdre O’Callaghan’s verité photos of drummers in rehearsal rooms, and Ewan Spencer’s images of UK garage clubbers. The show will also include videos shot by Anton Corbijn, Seamus Murphy and Tom Beard for Arcade Fire, PJ Harvey, FKA Twigs and others.

On 30 July, The Wire’s Art Director Ben Weaver will be discussing music photography with a number of the magazine’s photographers in one of the Photographers’ Gallery’s regular free Socials events, while on 9 September a special edition of The Wire Salon will examine the visual aesthetics of underground and experimental music scenes. In addition, throughout August, the magazine’s Inner Sleeve column will go live for four free Thursday evening events in which various music photographers discuss their favourite album sleeves. Portuguese festival announces acts for 2015 edition

The first acts have been announced for the fifth edition of Portugal’s Semibreve Festival, which takes place over various venues in the city of Braga from 30 October–1 November. Dopplereffekt, Vessel and Hans-Joachim Roedelius have been confirmed for the festival, whose previous line-ups have included Ben Frost, Demdike Stare, Vladislav Delay, Jon Hopkins, Mouse on Mars, Alva Noto, Fennesz, Emptyset, Ryoji Ikeda and The Haxan Cloak.

Ken Hollings broadcasting radio show on William S Burroughs

BBC Radio 4 programme looks at cutup as satirical device, including interviews with Vicki Bennett, Armando Iannucci and more

Author and Wire contributor Ken Hollings has produced a show for BBC Radio 4 on William Burroughs's cut ups. The show traces the history of the cut up, from its roots in the Dadaist movement through Burroughs and Brion Gysin, to tape splicing and digital editing, looking at the cut up as a satirical device.

The show “Cutting Up The Cut Up” includes interviews with Armando Iannucci, Cassetteboy, Kevin Foakes (aka DJ Food), Vicki Bennett and others. It will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 25 June at 11:30am.

The spring 2015 edition of Kai von Rabenau's magazine upends visual logic for long form interview

The spring 2015 issue of Kai von Rabenau’s Mono.Kultur magazine features an extended interview with Terre Thaemlitz, taking into account her various monikers including DJ Sprinkles, GRRL, Social Material and others. Von Rabenau's design for this issue of the magazine also shifts away from conventional grids. It is printed on six paper stocks, and with non-standard, non-linear layouts.

Terre Thaemlitz talked about the politics of sexuality, her disillusion with the music industry, and why roller disco was so amazing. More info online here.

Annette Peacock performing in Utrecht this November

Sunn O))) curated section of Dutch festival Le Guess Who? to feature Peacock and others

Annette Peacock is performing at Netherlands festival Le Guess Who? this November as part of the festival’s Sunn O))) curated line up. The performances mark the first time in over two decades Peacock has performed in The Netherlands.

The Sunn O))) section of the line up also includes The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Magma, French black metal group Aluk Todolo and Julia Holter, plus Caspar Brötzmann and FM Einheit’s collaboration, Einheit Brötzmann.

The rest of the programme includes Deerhunter, Faust, Adrian Sherwood, The Necks, Bo Ningen, and Lotic, among others. More acts will be added to the programme in the coming months. Le Guess Who? takes place across various venues in Utrecht, 19–22 November. More details here.
