Aphex Twin has announced his first album proper in 13 years, to be released on 22 September via Warp. Announcements and hints came via a series of unorthodox channels, including the deep web and a blimp flying over London, which came at the tail end of the crowdfunded release of lost album Caustic Window, a test pressing of which was sold to Minecraft creator Markus Persson. Syro was recorded over a number of years, and Richard D James told Rolling Stone it covers "about a fifth of what I've done in the last 10 years". A series of album playback listening events will also take place at various urban centres around the world, there's a full list of those here.

Syro will be released digitally, on CD and vinyl, and as a deluxe triple vinyl set, with artwork by The Designer's Republic on 22 September. Listen to "minipops 67" below.

Mouse On Mars are turning 21, and they’re celebrating their birthday with a two day festival and box set release. The box set 21 Again will be produced in an edition of 500 records, containing, among other things, collaborations with and contributions from Tortoise, Modeselektor, Atom TM, Laetitia Sadier, Junior Boys, Yoshimi, Machinedrum, Herbert, Oval, Mark E Smith, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, Prefuse 73 and more. The album will also contain several ‘interludes’, including one by Mark E Smith.

Taking place between 31 October–1 November at Berlin's Hebbel Am Ufer, Mouse On Mars’s 21 Again festival will feature performances by Kathy Alberici, DJ Scotch Egg vs Mouse On Mars, Cavern Of Anti-Matter, Laetitia Sadier, Oval and Errorsmith among others, plus installations and interventions by Susan Philipsz and Rosa Barba and more.

21 Again will be released 31 October (during the festival) by Monkeytown Records.

Devo are releasing a live album and film of their recent tour, Hardcore Devo Live, where the group played early material written when they had just started out in Akron, Ohio in the mid-1970s. The recordings were made at the group’s 28 June 2014 performance at Oakland's Fox Theater in California. A portion of the proceeds from the Hardcore Devo tour went to the family of Devo's guitarist and keyboardist Bob Casale, aka Bob 2, who died earlier this year.

Bob 2’s brother Gerald Casale is quoted as saying: "I'm not noted for being optimistic but the Hardcore Devo Live horn 'o' plenty has me genuinely high hopin' as we mix and edit a truly Devolved show. One for the ages!"

Devo Hardcore Live will come out on CD, DVD, Blu-ray disc and vinyl via Pledge Music, a crowdfunding platform of sorts, where those pledging music will receive access to extra footage, tour artefacts and more.

Wire contributor David Keenan and musician Heather Leigh have announced that their Glasgow based Volcanic Tongue record shop and mailorder is closing its physical space immediately. In a message through their email bulletin and on Facebook, VT explain: “A lot has gone into this decision and it makes sense to us that after ten years running the shop we’d want to make a significant change and the time is now. In the past two years we sadly lost two major figures that were an integral part of the day-to-day running of Volcanic Tongue: David’s father, Tom Keenan (who built both of our shops entirely by hand) and Volcanic Tongue’s most longterm customer, friend and employee, Shaun Falconer. After their deaths running the physical space didn’t make sense any longer, it’s simply not the same without them.”

Both Keenan and Leigh Murray are also increasingly active with creative work outside Volcanic Tongue, which, they say, makes it impossible to maintain a physical shop and mailorder. Not having the shop will mean a significant reduction in overhead, VT say, enabling them to carry more stock from the smaller labels who they feel have lost out from the demands of running the space. VT say that their mailorder will run as usual, though there might be some delays during the transition period. They also ask that all customers who have reserves with them get it touch to clear them.

Celebrating the work of Philip Glass, the aptly named Glassfest takes place across three venues in Bristol between 7–10 November. The festival includes a conversation with the composer, a solo piano concert, film screenings and The Philip Glass Ensemble performing music from Glass’s soundtrack to the 1982 film Koyaanasqatsi.

The Ensemble then go on a short UK tour taking in Bristol Colston Hall (8 November), Manchester Bridgewater Hall (10), Basingstoke The Anvil (12) and Cambridge Corn Exchange (14 November). Ahead of the retrospective tour, Glass's new opera based on Franz Kafka's The Trial opens at London Royal Opera House on 10 October, which also goes on tour until 10 November. The Creative Music Foundation has announced its programme of guiding artists for its annual autumn music workshop, which will take place on a mountainside in Big Indian, New York. Joining the CMF's Karl Berger and Ingrid Sertso are composer and reed player Marty Ehrlich, composer and drummer John Hollenbeck, plus Indian music masters Steve Gorn and Badal Roy.

The workshop involves improvisatory orchestra performances, plus body movement and breath work, along with personal tuition. It will take place between 29 September–3 October at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York. More details here.

A free 16 page PDF has been published about Malachi Ritscher, the Chicago jazz expert who killed himself in an act of self immolation in protest at the war in Iraq in 2006. The extended essay was written by Chicago journalist Marc Fischer, with contributions and help from others.

Ritscher was, among other things, a dedicated documenter of the city’s jazz and experimental music from the early 1990s until his death, and recorded audio at two of The Wire's festivals at The Empty Bottle.

Dutch festival Le Guess Who? has announced that Swans front man Michael Gira is programming a special three day segment, called Mouth To Mouth. Taking place between 20–23 November, Mouth To Mouth will feature Swans, Wire, Silver Apples, Ben Frost, Prurient, Sir Richard Bishop, Baby Dee, Carla Bozulich, Jenny Hval, Okkyung Lee and others. Gira’s nights complement the main strand of the festival, which features Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, St Vincent, Einstürzende Neubauten and others

Another day of Le Guess Who? will be taken up by a 24 hour Dronefest, featuring William Basinski, Stephen O’Malley, Tim Hecker, Raime and others to be announced.

The Blue Tapes label is expanding operations with a new DVD and artwork series titled Blue Movies. The first release in the series is a short narrative film by Oxbow singer Eugene S Robinson, with an art print by photographer Timothy Wilson (aka .sWineDriveR.) titled Dolorosa In A Jar.

On 23 August a Robbie Basho tribute concert will take place at Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia. The programme includes a special preview screening of Voice Of The Eagle: The Enigma Of Robbie Basho. Also performing on the night are acoustic guitar players Daniel Bachman and Ryley Walker (both of whom have releases on Tompkins Square), plus folk duo Arborea.

The documentary, directed by London based film maker Liam Barker, includes archive footage plus interviews with his former students, contemporaries and friends. It successfully crowdfunded production in June last year and you can watch a trailer for it below. More details here.
