Oral history of Berlin Techno published in German

Earlier this month German publishing house Surkhamp released an oral history of Berlin Techno by Felix Denk (editor of Zitty) and Sven von Thülen (DJ and editor of De:Bug). The Sound of Family: Berlin, Techno And The Reunification (original title Der Klang der Familie. Berlin, Techno Und Die Wende) covers the emergence of Techno and the club scene in Berlin after the wall came down. It includes transcripts of interviews with Juan Atkins, Mike Banks, Danielle De Piciotto, Alec Empire, Mark Ernestus, Thomas Fehlmann, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Ron Murphy, Wolfgang Tillmans, Paul Van Dyke and others.

The catch is that the book doesn't currently have a UK or US publisher, meaning there's no English translation from the German original yet. German speakers can read an extract here.

New York Le Poisson Rouge (2 May), California Beyond Baroque (5).

Fonal starts donations page to cover vinyl releases

Fonal records has set up a donations page on its site to fund vinyl production. Sami Sänpäkkilä says that his sales have been in decline since 2009 and now he needs to find alternative means in order to continue pressing vinyl.

"We've started our own site as we are not collecting pledges for a certain release, which is what Kickstarter or IndieGoGo are for" he says. "What we hope to achieve is a few random donations now and then to cover our losses that mainly stem from doing vinyl.

"The kind of elaborate packages we make with extra booklets, UV coatings, or special inserts, can cost anything from €2000–€3500. That doesn't include copyright costs, shipping or other extra costs. We do mainly a 500 print run, of which a certain amount we give to the artist, some we use for promo. We basically need to sell all of the run to make ends meet."

Sänpäkkilä asked fans if a donations page would work (he had reservations), but found the response overwhelmingly positive, so is now accepting donations of €1– €500. For more info, or to donate, head here

Tate á Tate: alternative audio tours in protest at BP

A series of alternative audio tours titled Tate á Tate have been commissioned by activist organisations Platform, Art Not Oil and Liberate Tate, hijacking the Tate in protest at its involvement with BP.

Former Wire staffer and current contributor Phil England has produced a Tate Modern audio tour with Jim Welton titled Drilling The Dirt ('A Temporary Difficulty'), which references Sir Nicholas Serota's comments that: "We all recognise they have a difficulty at the moment but you don't abandon your friends because they have what we consider to be a temporary difficulty."

An audio tour for Tate Britain has been produced by Ansuman Biswas, titled The Panaudicon, which takes listeners to locations around the world where BP is drilling for oil. Isa Suarez, Mae Martin and Mark McGowan have created a soundtrack for the Tate Boat which travels between Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Titled This Is Not An Oil Tanker, it uses music to communicate the experiences of communities affected by the oil industry.

The Tate á Tate audio tours can be downloaded to smartphones, and a launch takes place at London's Calder Bookshop Theatre on 23 March at 6:30pm. Listen below.
