Reprint of Pauline Oliveros’s book Software For People

Pauline Oliveros's 1984 book Software For People has been reprinted

Pauline Oliveros's much sought-after 1984 publication Software For People: Collected Writings 1963–80 is back in print. Originally published in 1984, it’s an anthology of essays that covers a broad range of the US composer, philosopher and accordionist’s interests. “I am publishing this collection of twenty-six articles partly to show the growth and change in my attitudes, interests and perceptions over the seventeen year period presented,” explains Oliveros in her introduction. “Software For People,” she continues, “is an attempt to make a contribution not only to music theory and technique but also to contemporary musical issues and thought.” Her selections range from the technical focus of pieces such as “Karl Kohn: Concerto Mutabile” and “Tape Delay Technique For Electronic Music Composition”, to philosophical essays like “The Noetics Of Music” and “On Sonic Meditations”; from the poetic musings of “Sonic Images” and “Dialogue With Basho”, to discussions about gender and education in “The Contributions Of Women Composers” and “Modes Of Attention And Awareness In The Teaching Of Musicianship”.

Rare copies of the original Smith Publications edition have sold for up to £176 on Amazon. This time round the book is self-published through the CreateSpace independent publishing platform and it costs $35 via Oliveros's website and Amazon.

As reported in October 2015, film maker Daniel Weintraub is currently working on a documentary about Oliveros.

Breadwoman gets Heatsick on tour in February

Heatsick's Steven Warwick will perform with Anna Homler in the live incarnation of Breadwoman

Following The Wire's stream of Anna Homler and Steve Moshier’s forthcoming Breadwoman & Other Tales, it has been announced that Homler will be touring the project with Steven Warwick, otherwise known as Heatsick.

Originally recorded in 1985, Breadwoman & Other Tales saw Homler in musical dialogue with electroacoustic composer and LA avant garde contemporary Steve Moshier on a set of otherworldly spirituals sung in an invented language.

This live incarnation will feature the US vocalist and performance artist Homler practicing this divining speech with Warwick acting as her modern-day accomplice.

The project will debut on 5 February at this year's CTM festival, with following performances at London Cafe Oto (9), Glasgow The Glad Cafe (11) and Cardiff Chapter Arts Centre (13). Breadwoman & Other Tales is released on 5 February via ReRVNG.

James Murphy has reformed LCD Soundsystem

LCD Soundsystem are back

James Murphy has reformed LCD Soundsystem, the band he dissolved five years ago. The 2011 split was marked by a farewell concert at New York Madison Square Gardens and a near two hour documentary, Shut Up And Play The Hits. Murphy and band will play US festival Coachella in April, and there are plans for a new album. Addressing fans and critics via Facebook, Murphy said, “Last night I sat with Al [Doyle, part-time member] and Nancy in a weird Italian bar and we talked about how fucking awesome it was that so many people were happy to have us back. But that doesn’t take away from those who feel hurt. To you I have to say: I’m seriously sorry. The only thing we can do now is get back into the studio and finish this record.”

FoundSounds app release version 2

Updated version of field recording app available

The second edition of the field recording app FoundSounds has just been published. The on the hoof field recording and collage project run by Canadian artist David Jensenius was originally released in November 2014. The recent update adds additional functions such as an elongated recording time and compatibility with various other Apple products including the Apple watch and Apple TV. Jensenius states, “The app allows users to record and share sounds they find intriguing, surprising, or even disruptive. Recordings are geotagged, so users can browse sounds by scrolling through a timeline or exploring a map. Additional avenues of exploration include the ability to construct a geographically specific sound collage or to go for a sound walk, taking in nearby sounds as one passes them.”

The app can record up to two minutes of sound, and it’s available as a free download.
