Portishead's Adrian Utley commissioned for Sonic Journeys

Portishead member Adrian Utley has been commissioned to compose a "Sonic Journey" by SoundUK and The National Trust. Previous Sonic Journeys have been recorded by Shackleton & Vengeance Tenfold, Micachu and Will Gregory of Goldfrapp.

In it, Utley journeys around The National Trust’s Croft Castle in Herefordshire, taking a route through the grounds to the sites of some of its ancient trees. The piece will come with a route map for listeners to retrace Utleys steps, and a video has been shot by John Minton.

From 29 June to 31 October all Sonic Journeys (audio and videos) will be available to download, and Utley's Sonic Journey #4 will be available to download onto a smartphone for 12 months from 15 October. Sonic Journeys is being absorbed into The Space for this next release, and will be available there. More details on Sonic Journeys here.

Dan (no last name given) from Old Apparatus says: "We started the label in order to build upon the dystopian landscapes that were touched upon with our previous releases and further expand the range of sounds that we have been transmitting. Old Apparatus is a collective of three producers and one artist and we all run the label together, from conception to release. Everything is done by us."

Plans for forthcoming releases are so far restricted to Old Apparatus material, and the focus is on vinyl releases. More details here.

WFMU documentary rewards pledges with subliminal messages

Film maker Tim Smith has started a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund a documentary on US freeform radio station WFMU. As with all Kickstarter campaigns pledges of cash will be rewarded. As well as the usual stickers, DVDs, T shirts and other WFMU ephemera, Smith is offering anyone who donates over $100 the chance to insert a subliminal message into the film in the form of one frame.

The film focuses on the station's manager Ken Freedman (who once raised cash for WFMU by attempting to take flight via a number of weather balloons attached to a chair) and includes performances by Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Joanna Newsom and others. Smith is aiming to raise $50,000 by 11 July, and at time of writing had just passed the $10,000 mark. Watch a trailer below. More details here.
