Precinct publishing new translation of Ferruccio Busoni's Sketch Of A New Aesthetic Of Music

Precinct books are publishing a new translation of Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni's Sketch Of A New Aesthetic Of Music. The essay, written in 1907, looks to the future of music as one where it was freed from the conventions of the time. As well as a composer and concert pianist, Busoni was also tutor to a number of notable students: Edgard Varèse, Kurt Weill, Stefan Wolpe and Arnold Schoenberg, among others.

This new translation (by Pamela Johnston) includes an introduction to the book by Wire contributor and writer Adam Harper, and the poetic epilogue (titled "The Realm Of Music") Busoni wrote to his wife.

Harper talks on the book at a launch in Bethnal Green, East London. More details here. London X Marks The Bökship, 21 September, 6:30pm.

Creative Audio Archive crowdfunding 15 year archive of live music in Chicago

Chicago's Creative Audio Archive is crowdfunding a project to preserve 15 years worth of recordings of live music in the city, made by Malachi Ritscher between 1981 and 2006 and covering shows by Peter Brötzmann, Tortoise, Michael Zerang, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Kevin Drumm, Xiu Xiu and others. Ritscher recorded around five concerts a week until his death by self-immolation in 2006, in protest at the Iraq war.

The project aims to raise $5,000 to make digital copies of the recordings, in an effort to preserve and protect those that are currently most at risk from decay and degradation. CAA then has plans to take the recordings on tour around the city in the form of temporary listening stations, plus a showcase where those who have donated will have the opportunity to listen to the recordings. Hydra Head Records to close

Hydra Head records, which has released records by Merzbow, Prurient, Isis and others, is folding. Hydra Head founder Aaron Turner put its closure down to "years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems amongst the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise our aesthetic standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging (ie unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general, are amongst the chief reasons for our inability to continue".

The label will be closing in December, but will maintain its back catalogue in an effort to repay debts to artists and manufacturers. Hydra Head says it wants to continue with all planned releases, and as such is starting a sell-off off all stock, with discounted CDs, LPs and merchandise, including test pressings. Subway Sect documentary Raindance premiere may be one and only screening

A film on Vic Godard's British punk group Subway Sect is screening at Raindance Film Festival on 4 October. Titled Derailed Sense, the film is directed by Graham Bendel, who also directed Billy Childish Is Dead.

Derailed Sense was also scheduled to be screened at London's Barbican early next year, but a dispute between Godard and Bendel means that currently it's unlikely any future screenings will go ahead, and so Raindance may be your only chance to see the film. It includes archive footage from the late 70s and early 90s, and documents Subway Sect's influences and their dealings with the notorious Bernie Rhodes.

Derailed Sense shows on 4 October, 8pm, more details here.

UPDATE: Due to the ongoing dispute between Godard and Bendel, the Subway Sect documentary will no longer be screened at Raindance, and has been pulled from the festival's schedule.
